Roles are specific, pre-ordained playstyles for classes. With one word, a role summarizes how a class are meant to engage the enemy in battle. While not mandatory, it is recommended that the player closely follow their class's role in battle, as every class is developed to fulfill this role as efficiently and as accurately as possible. Hybrid classes can also bear multiple roles -- their Main role, and their subsequent Subrole(s).

Duelist

Assailant Portrait

Duelist, otherwise known as a shoto, or all-rounder is heavily focused on one-on-one combat. Classes with the Duelist role have answers to any situation, and can play out any role, but their moveset is mostly comprised of single-target attacks. Because of this, duelists are weak against fighting multiple opponents, and most Duelists usually do not excel at offense nor defence.

For example, Assailant is a Duelist.

Grappler

Grappler, as the name suggests, utilizes grabs and armor-breaking specials to penetrate through the enemy's defenses at close range, making them powerful at strike-throw (attack or grab) mixes. They also have high HP to compensate, making them extremely deadly at close range. To compensate for this however, Grapplers usually lack framedata and mobility, meaning that Grapplers have trouble approaching the enemy to attack. This means that Grapplers are effective against turtling opponents as well as tanks and rushdowns, but are poor against those who have no obligation to approach, such as zoners.

The cancelled class Enforcer was a Grappler.

Hexer

A Hexer is heavily focused on crippling the enemy with a wide array of debuffs. Classes with the Hexer role are often equipped with many attacks that apply debuffs upon hit -- typically ones that can be stacked or are strengthened by one another. If played correctly, Hexers can devastate the enemy with their arsenal of debuffs, but are otherwise lacking in raw damage and other offensive potential. Because of this, they are weak against opponents with Counters or attacks that provide immunity to their moveset's Attack Types.

Rushdown

Kurai Portrait

Rushdown is heavily focused on closing the distance between them and the enemy. Classes with the Rushdown role are often equipped with numerous means to apply pressure, and to prevent the enemy from escaping. This includes high walkspeed, fast-acting attacks, attacks that apply the (-) Movement decreased debuff, or even scarier, all three simultaneously. However, their high offensive potential often results in little defensive potential in return. Because of this, rushdowns are weak against sturdy opponents that do not need to escape, such as Tanks.

For example, Kurai is a Rushdown.

Stance

Stance characters are capable of switching 2 roles or movesets at their disposal usually by changing "stances", but these movesets specialize in a certain role so greatly that the opponent can counter it with leisure if the incorrect stance is used, meaning that stance characters must use the correct stance or they will find themselves at a disadvantage.

For example, Revenant, while not documented to be a stance character, has two stances: Fist Stance and Sword Stance.

Tank

Citadel Portrait

Tank is heavily focused on outlasting the enemy through high survivability and defense. Classes with the Tank role are almost always granted above-average Health (>1000 HP), and often have numerous Super Armored attacks at their disposal. However, they are also handicapped by low walkspeed and little to no means of escape. Because of this, tanks are naturally weak to enemies with a high focus on ranged combat and zero obligation to approach, such as Zoners.

For example, Citadel is a Tank.

Zoner

Virtue Portrait

Zoner is heavily focused on maintaining distance between them and the enemy. Classes with the Zoner role often have movesets with far-reaching pokes, projectiles, and AoE, making them great at neutral. This means that they lack safe or fast close-ranged moves and have fragile HP, making them terrible against mobile classes like rushdowns, but their pokes and far-reaching attacks make them great to those with little mobility, such as tanks and grapplers.

For example, Virtue is a Zoner.

Setplay

SecareSilhouette

A Setplay is focused on "setting up" situations for the opponent to deal with. They often have movesets meant for placing opponents in certain situations where they are forced to deal with, often exposing them to a combo. Setplays often have movesets to apply pressure, set up hazards, and even cause debuffs. Their weakness is that they may be reliant on their abilities: if their trickery was already dealt with before a Setplay could attack, it won't be good for them.

For example, Secare is a Setplay.

Puppet

A Puppet is a class that can control another entity. They are heavily focused on offense and mix-ups thanks to this trait. Additionally, it may cause an opponent to be focused on dealing with the entity and not the player, which may leave them open for an attack. Many puppets have to make sure that they use their entity responsibly, as not only is misuse very risky, but the player does not have many abilities for themselves.

For example, the cancelled class Imperium was supposed to be a puppet.

Kiter

A Kiter is a class that is focused on pressuring their opponent, and have both long-ranged and close-ranged capabilities.

Not much is known about this role, but budoti has use the term for Rogue.
