"Vast in the shadows of a broken prison, Corruption lays awake as eyes stream down with tears of war. Corruption, the rise of the fallen as ravens flock in their presence, only nothing but vengeance determines their fate."

- Faction description

Corruption

Corruption is the collective identity of those under the influence of the Void. One way or another, members of Corruption have become afflicted and had their soul touched by Void Energy, gaining access to an eldritch power in exchange for loss of humanity -- assuming they survive the transformation. Whether they were willing or not in their previous life does not matter -- should they become pawns of Aominoa, Corruption is relentless in their pursuit to make the rest of the world just like them.

With Aominoa free at last after the merging of the Enmas, one can only imagine what he and his thralls have in store for the grim world of Villidia.

History[]

Origin[]

The first epochs of "corruption" can be traced to the Swarm, back during the tumoltuous beginnings of the Great War. During these times, the Swarm ruined all life it touched, and it had a unique effect on living organisms with souls -- humans, for example. This effect brought about the rapid rise of the Infested, which stampeded the countryside of Vaningard and its neighboring countries.

This epidemic, however, eventually lost steam as foreign nations rallied around Vaningard and their mana-based military power, which proved especially effective against the Infested. Because of this, Aominoa felt the need to empower the Swarm and force his creations to evolve. On top of this, people were reportedly surviving a touch from the Swarm, becoming a "corrupted" version of themselves. Because of these developments, the term "corruption" was diversified from mere terminology to an identity.

Post-Great War[]

Despite their leader's imprisonment in Lunargalade at the end of the Great War, Corruption and its Swarm still persisted in certain areas. Areas defiled by the Swarm still blistered the land of Villidia, and Aominoa's pawns not killed directly during the Great War (including the Three Kings, who are now dormant within their masks) lingered in hiding, awaiting the return of their master.

Black Magic I[]

While several agents of Corruption persisted long after the Great War, they would only gain momentum again following the founding of Power, and its subsequent war against Purity. This and Nel Orijua's creation of the Enmas revitalized Corruption with a new means of preying on mortalkind. Additionally, because Villidia is still plagued with corrupted hotspots such as the one housing the Uumo, new victims inevitably fell prey to the Void's corrupting influence. Some even survived the transformation, leading to people such as Aria and Norra.

When Aominoa was resurrected at the Battle of Lunargalade and withdrew to the Void, the Corrupted followed suit, lying in wait and focusing on trying to survive. Whether they expected him to spell doom for all of Villidia, or forgive it of its sins, most of those aligned with Corruption waited for Aominoa's next move.

Trivia[]

  • The iconic Corruption symbol of three lines and a dot (similar to an anchor) is derived from the symbol of the Void, the Realm that is directly tied with Corruption and its founder, Aominoa.
    • Black Magic II's Corruption symbol (with two extra lines at the top left and right) represents the full power of the symbol in its native Realm, the Void. Black Magic I's logo represents a weaker version of the symbol found around Villidia, because Void Energy cannot manifest its full power anywhere other than the Void.
  • In the early stages of Black Magic I, Corruption's symbol was originally planned to be a darker, lunar blue that mirrors the bright teal of Purity. This would have been a reference to Aominoa's color scheme before he was corrupted, but it was later changed to magenta.
